Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
is affectionately nickname "tiger" by West Indian cricket fans.
Chanderpaul is the most experienced player
in the West Indies team after Brian Lara, Chanderpaul has been used in
several different positions in the batting order for Test and One-Day
Internationals. Usually a gritty accumulator of runs, Chanderpaul has
also shown that he is capable of attractive stroke-play like he did
when he romped to a century off 69 balls against Australia on his
Bourda home ground in Guyana in 2003.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul made his
debut for West Indies against England in 1994, Chanderpaul scored
15 half centuries in his first 18 matches he finally convert
to triple figures in his 19 match scoring 137 not out against India at
Kensington Oval in 1996-97. Chanderpaul was regarded by many as mainly
a Test cricketer early in his career, now those thoughts are all in the
past as the versatile left hander, elevated to captaincy in 2005, has
14 Test centuries and 3 ODI centuries.
Chanderpaul has scored ten of
his thirteen Test centuries in the last four years in separate series
against India, at home and away, and against Australia and South Africa
and maintains a decent Test average in the mid-forties. His dedication
and commitment was rewarded with the captaincy during the Digicel home
series against South Africa 2005.
In April 2006, after a dismal
run with the bat and an unsuccessful stint as captain, Shivnarine
Chanderpaul resigned as West Indies captain in order to concentrate on
his batting. As captain in fourteen Tests he won one and lost ten with
three draws. In sixteen one-day internationals, he won two and lost
fourteen.
