SRI LANKA BEAT BANGLADESH BY 198 RUNS

PORT-OF-SPAIN,
Trinidad - Sanath Jayasuriya scored his 24th One-Day International
hundred for Sri Lanka, as they registered a comprehensive 198-run win
under the Duckworth/Lewis system against Bangladesh in a Group B
match Wednesday.
The 37-year-old Jayasuriya excited the fair-sized crowd at the Queen's
Park Oval, with a fantastic display of batsmanship to score 109, and
lay the foundation for Sri Lanka's challenging total of 318 for four
from their allotted 50 overs.
He slammed seven fours and seven sixes from a mere 87 balls and
received good support from Kumar Sangakkara (56), Chamara Silva (52 not
out) and skipper Mahela Jawardene (46).
In response, Bangladesh, facing a revised target of 311 runs from 46
overs for victory after a break for rain, could only muster 112 from 37
overs, with Mohammad Ashraful top-scoring with an unbeaten 45.
Fast bowler Lasith Malinga finished with three for 27 to lead the Sri Lankan attack.
Bangladesh started poorly, losing opening batsmen Shahriar Nafees
without scoring with the score on one in the opening over and slipped
to seven for two when Tamim Iqbal also fell cheaply in the fourth over.
From there, it was a procession to and from the pavilion, until rain intervened with the total on 72 for six after 27.5 overs.
On the resumption, only Ashraful, who hit six fours from 63 balls, showed any resistance as Bangladesh fell meekly.
Earlier, the decision by skipper Habibul Bashar to send the Sri Lankans
to bat backfired early in the game as veteran Jayasuriya and youngster
Upul Tharanga gave their team a flyer.
The duo posted a 98-run opening partnership from 86 balls, with both
batsmen looked quite assured against the opposition opening bowlers -
Marhrafee Bin Mortaza and Syed Rasel, both of whom were a far cry from
their impressive performance in their opening match against India last
Saturday.
The enterprising first wicket partnership came to an end in the 15th
over, when Tharanga cutting at left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique, was
brilliantly caught at point by Aftab Ahmed for 26.
Sri Lanka then got several solid partnerships, en route to their
eventual total. Jayasuriya added a further 39 for the second wicket
with Jayawardene who scored 46, before retiring hurt on 83 with cramps.
Jayawardene added 65 with Sangakkara whose knock needed 55 balls, with three fours and one six.
Silva belted five fours and two sixes from 48 balls while Jayasuriya returned to complete his century.
