SEHWAG
CENTURY GETS INDIA FIRST POINTS

PORT-OF-SPAIN,
Trinidad - Opener Virender Sehwag struck a brilliant century to lead
India to a record-breaking victory over the lesser fancied Bermuda in
their 2007 Cricket World Cup, Group B match on Monday at the Queen's
Park Oval.
The Indians faced with a must win situation to stay alive in the group,
brushed aside their miserable display against Bangladesh on Saturday to
post an impressive all-round display and earn a massive 257-run win.
It was the biggest margin of victory since Australia defeated Namibia
by 256-run in 2003 in South Africa.
India got a stroke-filled 114 from Sehwag and half-centuries from
Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar, to rattle up 413 for
five, the highest-ever total in World Cup cricket.
It bettered the previous best of 398 made by Sri Lanka against Kenya in
Kandy in 1995/96. India had earlier gone past their previous best total
of 373 made against Sri Lanka in Taunton, England in 1999/2000.
Set the daunting task of scoring 414 for an unlikely victory, the
Bermudans were never in the hunt and were routed for a meagre 156 all
out in 43.1 overs. Only David Hemp offered resistance with an unbeaten
79, which came off 105 balls and included nine fours and one six.
The left-handed Kemp is a former England "A" player, who also
represented Glamorgan and Warwickshire in the English County
Championship.
Leading wicket-takers were pacer Ajit Agarkar and leg-spinner Anil
Kumble who both finished with three for 38. Lending good support was
left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan with two for 32.
After losing the toss and batting first, India started their innings
poorly losing Robin Uthappa (3), magnificently caught by Dwayne
Leverock at first slip, diving low down to his right in the second over
bowled by fast bowler Malachi Jones.
Sehwag joined Ganguly and the duo plundered the inexperienced bowling
attack to all parts of the field in a partnership worth 202 for the
second wicket.
The left-handed Ganguly hammered 89 from 114 balls with six fours and
two sixes while Sehwag needed just 87 balls for his knock, striking 17
fours and three sixes.
It was Sehwag's eighth One-Day International hundred and his first in
two years.
He was finally dismissed in the 30th over, caught in the deep by Jones
off fast bowler Kevin Hurdle with the total on 205 for two.
Ganguly fell soon afterward and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's cameo 29 from 25
balls was ended by a brilliant catch at long off by Janeiro Tucker, to
leave India at 269 for four in the 39th over.
Yuvraj then carved out a frenetic 83 from 46 balls with three fours and
seven sixes while Tendulkar weaved his 57 from 29 balls with two fours
and four sixes, in posting a quickfire 122 for the fifth wicket from
just 63 balls.
Off-spinner Delyone Borden finished with two for 30 to be Bermuda's
best bowler.
In their pursuit, Bermuda were in trouble early, losing Oliver Pitcher
in the first over bowled by Zaheer Khan without a run on the board.
Steve Outerbridge also went bowled by Zaheer for nine with the score on
18 in the seventh over and though the flow of wickets was stemmed with
a 29-run third wicket stand between Hemp and Borden (13), Bermuda would
never recover.
A clatter of wickets saw them slip to 63 for five in the 19th over
before Dean Minors lashed an aggressive 21 from 36 balls with three
fours and one six, in posting 43 from the sixth wicket with Hemp.
