WEST
INDIES EYE SECOND ROUND BUT WARY OF ZIMBABWE
• 18 March 2007
KINGSTON,
Jamaica - West Indies are bracing themselves for a competitive battle
when they face Zimbabwe in their Cricket World Cup, Group D match at
Sabina Park on Monday.
The surprise results of Saturday's matches at Sabina Park and Queen's
Park Oval has prompted the Caribbean side not to take anything for
granted in their build-up to their second match of the tournament.
The hosts started the competition with a hard-fought victory over
Pakistan by 54 runs last Tuesday, but captain Brian Lara is wary of the
threat from the opposition.
"It's going to be very competitive. Zimbabwe and Ireland have shown
they cannot be taken lightly," Lara told reporters on Sunday.
"We're going to play the game with the same gusto like we had against
Pakistan. A win will put us into the second stage, but it doesn't mean
we have any points as yet.
"We've got a very important two games left and we're going to take each
game one at a time."
After Tuesday's Group D opener, Zimbabwe and Ireland played to a tie on
Thursday and Ireland stunned Pakistan by three wickets in a low-scoring
match on Saturday.
On the same day, Bangladesh beat India to send a message that the
lesser teams are not to be taken lightly.
"The tournament has thrown up a couple surprises already. The so-called
minnows are giving a good account of themselves," Lara said.
"We've just got to play the next two games pretty tough. I'm almost
sure that Zimbabwe and Ireland are going to be looking us over and
seeing where our weaknesses lie."
West Indies had an afternoon practice session at Kensington Park, while
Zimbabwe trained at the same venue in the morning.
Zimbabwe coach Kevin Curran expressed disappointment at not achieving
full points against Ireland.
Chasing 222 to win, Zimbabwe were 203 for five in the 44th over before
suffering a dramatic collapse to lose five wickets for 18 runs.
"The way the results have gone so far, it has actually favoured us,"
Curran said.
"We were a bit disappointed getting only one point out of the Ireland
game, but the way the results are right now is we basically need to win
one of our next two games.
"So the match against West Indies is going to be a tough game, but
should we play well in all three departments, we have got a chance."
