Brian
Lara's West Indies take on Zimbabwe on Sunday, as they begin their
quest to qualify for the main draw of the ICC Champions Trophy. Despite
being defending champions the West Indies are rank 7th on the One Day
International table and must qualify for what can be describe
as the mini World Cup.
Having had a
decent run in One Day cricket in the last six months the West Indies
will go in to this first qualifier against Zimbabwe full of confidence.
In April and May during the first half of the Digicel One Day home
series the West Indies defeated Zimbabwe 5-0 in a seven match series.
During the second half of this same 2006 home series the West Indies
defeated the then third place Indians 4-1.
In
the recent Tri-Nation DLF Cup series in September, the West Indies
defeated world champions Australia in one of the prelimnary matches and
went on to reach the final of the tournament before going down to world
champions. The West Indies are now on the Sub Continent for four weeks
since first arriving for the DLF Cup, this should serve them well in
the qulifiers and the subsequent Champions Trophy.
Captain Brian Lara absence from playing in India for the last ten
years, should provide and added catalyst for the brilliant left hander
and his team to dominate against the bottom of the table Zimbabwe and
Bangladesh.
