Marlon Samuels
Marlon
Samuels is one of the games most naturally gifted batsmen,
Marlon Samuels has fallen short of expectation in nearly six sporadic
years of Test cricket. At 25 and maturing it now appears his
best cricket days are ahead of him. Samuels first came to the spot
light as a 19 year old on the 2000-2001 tour of Australia. He had not
yet represented Jamaica in a first class match but his approach at the
crease was extreamely impressive. However injuries and poor
form has since interupted what could be a promising career.
In the late 2002 tour of India
Samuels showed glimses of his brilliance when he
scored hundreds in both Test and One Day
Internationals. But he struggled with both form and injury,
and was dropped after two poor home Tests against Sri Lanka in 2003.
After forcing his way back into
the team for the 2005 tour of Australia, Samuals scored a brilliant 257
in the warm up game against Queensland, but fail in the first
two test before having to return home after being struck on the
left knee by Brett Lee.
A successfull series against
England A in the Caribbean in early 2006 saw Samels return to the West
Indies senior side for the Digicel home series against India.
Samuels seem to be free of a
troublesome knee injury which had plague his career over the last
couple of years. Since 2006 he has become a regular member of the one
day side this has matured both his batting and bowling.
His role in the middle order
along with his role as the fifth bowler is crucial to West Indies
fortunes in the up-coming World Cup.
