Wes Hall
Wes
Hall made his Test debut for the West Indies in the 1958
series against India at Mumbai. Wes Hall was big and
tall standing 6 feet 2, he was couragous, very quick and
hostile in the early part of his spell. He was tall and with his
classical action Hall was magnificent to watch, accelerating up to the
wicket he was an intimidating sight for all but the most resolute of
batsmen. On his debut tour to India and Pakistan in 1958-59, Hall took
46 wickets in eight Tests, and became a regular in the Test side for
the next ten years.
Wes Hall began his cricketing career at the Combermere school as a
wicket-keeper batsman, but when he joined Cable and Wireless in 1955 he
switched to fast bowling, and used his great height, tireless
attitude and accuracy to become the fastest, most feared bowler in the
world by 1960. He played 48 tests, capturing 192 wickets for an
impressive average of 26.38 runs each.
On his early tour to India Wes Hall was partnered by Roy Gilchrist, the
very fast but often Temperamental Jamaican speedster. But it was with
his great partner Charlie Griffith that he formed one of the greatest
and most feared opening attacks in the history of cricket, extreamely
popular both on and off the field, Hall also played in the Lancashire
League where for three consecutive seasons he took 100 wickets and for
Queensland where he established a state record of 43 wickets.
Wes Hall retired from
international cricket after the New Zealand series on Mar 3, 1969 ,
having taken 192 Test wickets with an average of
26.38. After retiring from Test cricket Hall coached in
Trinidad and Tobago and even represented them in a few games. He has
performed every possible role for the West Indies – player,
manager of touring West Indies side in 2001, selector, coach,
and finally President of the Board!, he is currently a Stanford 20/20
Legend with responsibility for team Bermuda.
