Larry Gomes
Larry
Gomes was Mr. dependability in a star studded West Indies
battting line up from 1976-1987. Slightly built, upright and elegant
Gomes was not in the typical mold of the traditional Caribbean batsman.
A deflector and nudger of the cricket ball Gomes depended on timing
rather than brute force and flamboyant stroke play. Despite this Gomes
was just as effective as his more cavaliar team mates, of his nine
centuries six were scored off Australia and none were
better than the 127 scored on a bouncy Perth strip in the 1984 Test
series.
Larry Gomes cemented his place in the West Indies team during
the turbulant years of World Series cricket. Gomes was selected in a
second stream eleven in 1978 to face the touring Australians,
after the Packer players pull out of the third Test to be played at
Bourda Guyana, in solidarity with Clive Lloyd who resigned as captain
sighting gross victimization.
Larry Gomes celebrated his opportunity with 101in the third Test and
followed it up with a second century a 115 in the fourth Test at port
of Spain. With these two innings Gomes embarked on a career that was
not to falter for many years.
Larry Gomes had a tremendous
understanding of his role in the West Indies side. Perhaps inevitably,
given the charisma of so many fine players around him, he was
underrated during his career and will be undervalued by histories of
the game. But not by those who played against him.
