Lance Gibbs
Lance Gibbs made his
Test debut for the West Indies in the 1958 home series against Pakistan
at Port of Spain. Tall and lanky with unusually long fingers and
prodigious turn Gibbs embodied some unique qualities as a right arm
offspinner. Gibbs was an aggressive bowler so aggressive that the
spinning finger on his right hand would often bleed, so savage was the
spin which he imparted to the ball. Lance Gibbs was the second bowler
in the history of Test cricket to take 300 wickets and the first
spinner to do so.
The 1960,s was Lane Gibbs most dominant period as a bowler during this
period he form one of the most interesting partnerships with Sir
Garfield Sobers. This Partnership saw Sobers fielding close under the
bat where he took some magnificant catches as Gibbs extracted
exaggerated bounce and turn from most surfaces.
Gibbs best bowling performance
came in the 1961-62 home series against India. In five Tests matches he
claimed 24 wickets at 20.41 runs apiece, including one of the
game's greatest spells of bowling at Kensington Oval Barbados, where he
single-handedly reduced the Indians from 149/2 to 187 all out with
eight wickets in 15.3 overs at a total cost of just six runs; Gibbs'
final innings return of 8-38 was his best in a Test match
Lance Gibbs retired from
international cricket after the 1975-76 tour of Australia, having taken
309 Test wickets with a staggering 18 five wicket hauls at an average
of 29.09. After retiring from Test cricket Gibbs emigrated to
the United States, in 1991 he managed the West Indies' tour
to England, he is currently a Stanford 20/20 Legend with responsibility
for team Bermuda.
