Jeffrey Stollmeyer
Jeffrey Stollmeyer
was born in Santa Cruz, Trinidad. He played in his first Test at the
age of eighteen on the 1939 tour to England mading 59 in his
debut innings at Lord's. Stollmeyer was tall and elegant with
a wide range of strokes marked especially by the drive, he made his
major impact on the international scene with his solid left-hand
opening partner, Allan Rae. In 1948-49 he and Allan Rae established
West Indies' first reliable opening partnership, putting on 239 against
India at Madras.
Stollmeyer's 160 was the highest
of his four Test centuries. As vice-captain of the team in
England in 1950, he played a significant role in its success, averaging
50.83. Jeffrey Stollmeyer gained the captaincy in the final
Test scoring a magnificant century during the 1951/2 tour of Australia
after John Goddard stood down in that series. He retained the captaincy
during the West Indies' next three series, all of which were played at
home home against India in 1952-53, England in 1953-54 and Australia in
1954-55;.
However his captaincy was for
from brilliant, this promted the selectors to bring back Goddard at the
age of 38 to lead the 1957 team to England, Stollmeyer, disappointed,
chose to retire from first-class cricket. He had scored 2,159 runs in
his Test career at an average of 42.33
After his playing career,
Jeffrey Stollmeyer had a long and distinguished career in cricket
administration. He served as President of the West Indies Board of
Control from 1974 until 1981, a tenure distinguished by his opposition
to Packer's World Series Cricket and the changes brought by World
series cricket.
Stollmeyer who was a considerable influence in West Indies cricket,
both on and off the field, died in a Florida hospital on September 10,
1989, at the aged of 68, as a result of being shot five times and
beaten about the head by intruders to his Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, home.
