Desmond Haynes
Desmond
Haynes was born in Holders Hill a small village
in Barbados that has a rich cricket history, producing numerous players
who have gone on to represent both Barbados and the West Indies. Haynes
made his Test debut on March 3, 1978, against Australia at
Port-of-Spain. This West Indies team of 1974 was the nucleus of the
world-beating team of the 1980s and Haynes, though a couple of years
later than the bunch, of stroke-playing super stars was quick to
establish himself.
For thirteen years Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge formed
what was the most successful opening partnership the West Indies have
had. One could argue that they were the best Test openers in history
but that would be a subjective judgement; suffice it to say that the
pair scored a total of 6,522 runs together in the middle, with an
average of 44.07. This average is bettered only by the
Australian pair of Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden who have an average
of 51.07 but scored 1,211 less.
Haynes was a professional to the core. He knew that every innings could
count and he wanted to be on the winning side; the professionalism came
through in the fact that he never played nasty to ensure this. His
batting was solid in defence but Haynes could also match Greenidge
stroke for stroke
Desmond Haynes along with Gordon
Greenidge formed what was an enduring and prolific opening partnership
for Barbados and the West Indies, with 16 century stands at the Test
level, four of them in excess of 200.

West Indies vs South
Africa 1992 Test Match One of the greatest test matches
played at Barbados with South Africa needing only 79 runs for victory
on the final day and 8 wickets in hand. They were still swept aside by
the pace and aggression of the West Indies. Eight wickets disappeared
for 25 runs in 20 overs under a devastating spell of bowling by Courtny
Walsh and Curtly Ambrose. This DVD captures the final day's excitement.
