Sir Clyde Walcott
Sir
Clyde Walcott in full flow was one of the most
intimidating sights in cricket. Standing 6ft. 2in. tall with broad
shoulders, Walcott drove the ball with immense power, especially off
the back foot and he could hook and cut with the best of them. Clyde
Walcott emerged as a force in West Indies cricket immediately after the
Second World War, and for a decade he was an integral part of the West
Indies side, immortalised as one of the Three Ws -- Walcott, Weekes and
Worrell.
Walcott first hit the
headlines in 1945-46 when he added an unbroken 574 for the fourth
wicket with schoolmate Frank Worrell for Barbados against Trinidad at
Port-of-Spain - it remains the record West Indian stand for any wicket.
He was then age 20 his contribution was a mammoth 314 not out. Clyde
Walcott made his Test debut for West Indies against England
in the 1947- 48 home series.
In 1955 home series, against
Australia, Clyde Walcott became the first batsman to score five
centuries in a single Test series, as he totalled 827 runs from 10
innings at an average of 82.7, including centuries in both innings at
Queens Park Oval, Trinidad and 155 in the first innings and 110 in the
second innings at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
Clyde Walcott retired from Test
cricket in 1960 at the relatively young age of 32. After retirement he
went on to manage several West Indian teams, and became a commentator
and coach in his native Barbados. He was president of the West Indian
Board before, in 1993, he succeeded Sir Colin Cowdrey as chairman of
ICC. Clyde Walcott was knighted in 1994 for his services to
cricket.
Sir Clyde Walcott died on August 26, 2006 aged 80 after suffering a
short illness. He was buried close to Sir Frank Worrell's
grave in a site which overlooks the 3W's Oval, the cricket
ground named in their honour at the University Of The West Indies
Campus at Cave Hill St. Michael Barbados.
