Denesh Ramdin
Denesh
Ramdin is a young wicketkeeper-batsman of tremendous
potential. The
wicket-keeping position in the West Indies team has been a game of
musical cheers since Jeffrey Dujon played the last of his 81 Test in
1991. Many in the Caribbean see Denesh Ramdin as the long-term solution
to the void left by Jeff Dujon, as well as a future captain of the West
Indies team.
Ramdin has been well prepared for the role as captain having led both
Trinidad & Tobago's and West Indies Under-19 sides before being
selected, aged 19 and with only 13 first-class games under his belt, as
first-choice keeper for the senior squad's tour of Sri Lanka in 2005.
Denesh Ramdin has impressed one
and all,
with his nifty foot work behind the stumps and with his often
bold couragous batting. In the series against Australia in November
2005, Ramdin show his worth with the bat scoring 71 in a face
saving partnership of 182 with Dwayne Bravo in the third Test in
Hobart.
In the subsequent series against
the Kiwi's
in New Zealand his form and confidence both behind and in front the
stumps seem to desert him; however in the 2006 home series against
India Ramdin's wicket-keeping was impressive on flat low pitches.
Ramdin also show glimpses of brilliance in
his batting during the final stages of the Sabina Park Test against the
Indians, when he scored a fighting in an effort to pull off a win for
the West Indies.
Despite a fall off in form both behind the stumps and in front he is
expected to play a significant role in the West Indies World Cup 2007
team.
