Chris
Gayle is an exceptionally powerful striker of the cricket
ball, especially off the back foot. Gayle has been the West
Indies #1 opening batsman for the past four years.
Tall and broad
shoulder his imposing nature at the crease has led many West Indies Cricket fans to compare him with former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd.
Gayle's lack of foot work
has often been criticize by cricket pundits; however Gayle has been
able to compensate for this apparent deficiency in his technique by
utilising his power, reach and timing. The result has been destruction
to bowler after bowler in both forms of the game.
On the 2004 tour of South
Africa, Chris Gayle overcame a foot injury, to smash two centuries in
successive Tests when he averaged 61 runs an innings. In the 2005 West
Indies home series against South Africa Gayle's 317 gave a clear
indication of what Brian Lara had prophesized years earlier - that
Gayle is the most likely, of the young West Indian batsmen, to move
beyond his 400 world record mark.
Consistently listed in the LG
players listing as among the leading all-rouders in One Day
Internationals Gayle's flat, brisk non-turning
off-spin bowling adds to his value in the Test and One-Day side where
he has been called upon to bowl at the depth. Gayle is also a good slip
fielder, he has also been earmarked as a future captain of the West
Indies cricket team.
In the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy
held
in India Chris Gayle show increase maturity as he lead
the West Indies batting. He played aggresively scoring three centuries
and was judge man of the series.
