Basil
Butcher is one of the many legendary batsmen to have
represented the the West indies at Test cricket he was a supple,
wristy, resolute batsman. He was born in Britsih Guiana in
1933, he made his debut for the West Indies on the 1958-59 tour if
India where he average 69.42. Butcher was an extreamely reliable number
four batsman as his Test cricket average of 47.31 will attest.
Butcher played five Test
in India when the West Indies Tour in 1958-59, he scored 484 runs at an
average of 60 with two centuries 103 in the third Test in Calcutta and
a 142 in the fourth Test in Madras. He also played Three
Test on the 1958-59 tour of Pakistan.
Butcher also played two Test
against the English cricket team in West Indies in 1959-60. He toured England in 1963 and played five Test, In 1964-65 the Australians were in the Caribbean and he also played five Test.
He was name Wisden
player of the year in 1970.
